Under the supervision of the Asian Cooperation Sector at MIIC and in coordination with the Korean Ministry of Strategy and Finance (MOSF) and the Korean Development Institute (KDI), an Egyptian delegation took part in the Exchange of Information Program held in Seoul, south Korea, during the period from 27\2\2017 to 5\3\2017.

The programme focuses on the provision of consultations and the exchange of successful experience between both countries to benefit from the Korean experience to develop the Egyptian Patent Office and protect the Egyptian intellectual properties, building on the visit of the KDI delegation and the Korean Patent Attorneys Association (KPAA) in February.

The delegation included 8 officials from the Egyptian Patent Office, affiliated to the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, and Mr. Walid El-Haddad, Head of MIIC’s Central Department for Cooperation with East Asia, and Ms. Nefret Zakarya Haroun, Coordinator of the experience exchange programme and official in charge of the Korean file at MIIC’s Asian Sector.

The programme focused on benefiting from the Korean experience in the field of patents and the Korean electronic patent system worldwide to join the largest four organisations in the electronic field in the US, the EU, Japan and China.

During the visit, the delegation became familiarised with the patent software and visited several governmental agencies specialised in the field, namely the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the Korean Invention Promotion Association (KIPA) and the Korean Institute of Intellectual Property (KIIP). It is worth noting that the Korean side is looking forward to implementing the project for the Egyptian Patent Office through a Korean grant.

On the sidelines of the visit, the Asian Sector’s officials held a meeting with representatives of the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) to follow up on ongoing projects between both countries and on future projects in the areas of electricity, metro and sanitation. The meeting also tackled the possibility of increasing the Korean investments in Egypt through proposing the convention of a forum in Seoul to familiarise the Korean businessmen with Egypt’s investment opportunities, in collabouration with the Egyptian Embassy in Seoul.

Further, a meeting was held with director-general of the International Economic Cooperation Sector at MOSF to discuss the programme’s action plan and priorities for 2018 in the fields of free zones, vocational and technical and the PPP.
